Why did the writers of the Articles of Confederation purposefully create a weak central government? | They were afraid of creating another tyranny (or rule by one). They didn't want a repeat of power governors and unfair laws. |
What two branches of government were missing from the Articles of Confederation | An executive branch to carry out the laws and a judicial brand or court system to interpret laws. It only had a legislative brand to make laws. |
What conclusions did nationalists draw about the Articles of Confederation? | The nationalists saw the weakness in the Articles of Confederation, they wanted a stronger, national government. |
Why did Shay's rebellion frighten the nationalists and other Americans? | Because even though it failed, it gave the nationalists more reason to battle for stronger national government. |
What is the main difference between the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey plan? | The Virginia Plan said that bigger state should have more representatives in the government and the NJ plan said that regardless of size, every state should have the same number of representatives. |
How did Roger Sherman help the Constitutional Convention succeed? | Because he came up with the idea of having two house - Senate and Representatives |
What were some of the arguments made against the constitution? | Antifederalists (people against the constitution) were afraid the Constitution would reduce the power of the states and that it would pass laws that were not suitable for certain parts of the country. They feared it would not protect citizens' rights. |
Why was the Bill of Rights added to the Constitution? | Represents the changes to the Constitution in the form of the 10 amendments. |
What do you think Washington meant when he called the Constitution "that precious depository of American happiness?" | He meant that it will change america and make it stronger and make it a happy place. The Constitution provided a framework for government and everything would fall into place. |
