COLD WAR The war which the US tried to contain communism against the Russians
COLD WAR TIME PERIOD 1945 - 1991
CAPITALISM The form of economy in which some people can be in higher classes with more money than the others.
COMMUNISM A form of economy which in theory everyone will have the same amount of money and will be equal.
SATELLITE NATIONS Nations that were taken over by the USSR.
CONTAINMENT Trying to keep communism in the parts of the world that it was in and try to prevent it from spreading to other countries.
CONTAINMENT EXAMPLES Truman Doctrine, Red Scare/McCarthyism, Berlin Airlift, Marshall Plan, NATO, United Nations & NASA
TRUMAN DOCTRINE To provide military & economic support for countries that had not yet turned communist.
RED SCARE/MCCARTHYISM The fear of communists living in the United States.
BERLIN AIRLIFT When the Russians blockaded West Berlin, Truman ordered hundreds of planes to drop packages with food in it for the people in Berlin.
MARSHALL PLAN The US provided European countries not under communism military and economic support.
NATO (VS. WARSAW PACT) A military alliance with much of western Europe. This group was created to defend against the Soviets.
UNITED NATIONS (UN) An intergovernmental corporation that is used to keep peace.
NASA The US base that was used to beat the Russians in the space race.
KOREAN WAR TIME PERIOD 1950 -1953
KOREAN WAR GOALS To stop the spread of communism.
KOREAN WAR LOCATION North and South Korea
KOREAN WAR AFTER WWII Japan controlled Korea after WWII; USSR supported North Korea and the US supported South Korea
KOREAN WAR RESULTS Ended at the 38th parallel. After both sides pushed back and forth, they both wound up with the same amount of land from when they first began.
VIETNAM WAR TIME PERIOD 1956 - 1975
VIETNAM WAR GOALS To stop the spread of communism into the South so that the neighboring countries in Southeast Asia would also fall into communism.
VIETNAM WAR LOCATION Vietnam
VIETNAM WAR AFTER WWII Vietnam was divided - North (communist) which was supported by the Soviet Union) - led by Ho Chi Minh South (non-communist) supported by the US - led by Ngo Dinh Diem
VIETNAM WAR RESULTS 1974 - Nixon pulled out troops; still funds S. Vietnam 1975 - North takes over the South and became one united communist country.
PRESIDENTS INVOLVED IN KOREAN WAR John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson & Richard Nixon.
DOMINO THEORY JFK belief that if South Vietnam fell to communism, neighboring countries in Southeast Asia would also fall to communism. He sent military advisers to help Diem fight the Vietcong.
VIETCONG Guerrillas who opposed Diem; many of who were peasant from South Vietnam.
CAMBODIA Fighting in Vietnam spilled over into this country causing a Civil War there.
HAWKS VS. DOVES One group was in favor of the war and the other was against the war
CUBAN MISSLE CRISIS LOCATION Cuba & Turkey
CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS DATE 1962
REASON FOR CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS USSR were putting nuclear missiles in Cuba
CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS RESULTS USSR withdrew their missiles from Cuba and US withdrew their missiles from Turkey.
DETENTE 1971 - Easing of tensions between US and USSR/China. Ended when Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979.

SALT AGREEMENT 1972 - Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. Limited number of nuclear weapons the US and USSR built. Paved way for START (1991) - Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty

STAR WARS 1981 - Defense program which included research for weapons that could shoot down soviet missiles from space. "We must find peace through strength"

INTERMEDIATE NUCLEAR FORCE (INF) TREATY Decided he had to sharply cut military spending to solve economic problems; After several summit meetings, they signed the treaty which the US and the USSR agreed to get rid of short-range and medium-range missiles. 1989 - He withdrew from Afghanistan
INTERMEDIATE NUCLEAR FORCE (INF) TREATY LEADER (S) Ronald Reagan & Mikhail Gorbachev
FALL OF THE USSR 1991-Unrest among 120 ethnic groups in 14 Soviet Republics; demanded self-rule; Gorbachev supported move toward democracy; Gorbachev held captive. Yeltsin & other reformers stopped the plotters, Gorbachev resigned & Soviet Union ceased to exist.
