| COLD WAR | War in which the U.S. tried to contain communism against the Russians. A struggle over political differences between nations carried on by methods of short of war. |
| CAPITALISM | An economic system based on private property and free enterprise. |
| COMMUNISM | A political theory advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs |
| CONTAINMENT | Action or policy of preventing the expansion of a hostile country or influence. Trying to keep communism in the parts of the world that it was in and trying to prevent it from spreading to other countries. |
| RED SCARE | The fear of communists living in the United States. |
| TRUMAN DOCTRINE/MARSHALL PLAN | Provided immediate aid to the Greeks and the Turks. The U.S. pledged that it would help fight the spread of communism worldwide. |
| BERLIN AIRLIFT | When the Russians blockaded West Berlin, Truman ordered hundreds of planes to drop packages with food in it for the people in Berlin. |
| BERLIN WALL | Wall put up to separate East Berlin from the rest of the noncommunist world. Also, stopped people from fleeing from East to West Berlin. |
| NATO | A military alliance with much of Western Europe. This group was created to defend against the Soviets. |
| WARSAW PACT | The Soviet's created their own alliances with all of the Communist countries. |
