QuestionAnswer
Wu Hao She was different from all Chinese emperors because she was a woman. She was the empress of China during the Tang Dynasty.
Deng Xiaoping This leader moved China away from strict communism, gave farmers more control, allowed students to study abroad, and expanded China's economy.
Communism A political and economic system in which the government controls all land and industry.
Nationalists The Republic of China; the government on the island of Taiwan. Established by Chiang Kai-shek in the late 1940s after he and his followers were driven from the mainland by the communists under Mao Zedong.
Chiang Kai-shek This person's army surrounded the communists in South China and cut off their food supplies. He was a Nationalist general.
Mao Zedong Chinese communist leader. He had Mao Zedong's and the little red book.
Mongols The nomadic herders from the north of China
Genghis Khan This person controlled most of northern China. He united the Mongol community and forced enemies to surrender.
Kublai Khan This person controlled most of southern China. Grandson of Genghis Kahn, founder of China's Yüan dynasty. He was responsible for improving paper money, leaving local leaders in power, supporting Confucianism, and expanding the Grand Canal.
Zheng He He was a muslim admiral with a fleet of ships. He would trade with other countries.
Marco Polo An Italian merchant who traveled to China.
Forbidden City Common people and foreigners were not allowed to enter this area of China without permission. It was a walled area in Beijing during the Ming Dynasty, that contained the palaces of the emperors.
Taiwan Foreign countries took advantage of China's weaknesses by taking territories. Japan took this.
Japan Foreign countries took advantage of China's weaknesses by taking territories. This country took Taiwan from China. This is an island nation off the eastern Asian mainland.
Hong Kong Foreign countries took advantage of China's weaknesses by taking territories. Britain took this country. It is a large city and center of international trade in mainland China.
Tiananmen Square More than 1 million students gathered here to demand democratic reforms. A square in Beijing. Government troops killed hundreds of the protesting students.
Guangzhou (Canton) A major port city in southeastern China; also known as Canton.
Beijing The capital of the People's Republic of China; first became China's capital during the reign of Kublai Kahn.
Silk Road This was an ancient trade route that connected Europe to Asia. To what is present-day Iran.
Chang Jiang River The longest river in China, flowing from Tibet into the East China Sea. It is also known as the Yangtze River.
Grand Canal A waterway in China connecting Beijing with cities to the south.
Great Leap Forward When China tried to industrialize, 20 million people starved to death. Instead of it being a great leo forward it was two steps back.
Commune A collective farm where the government decides which crops the farmers grow.
Cultural Revolution Mao Zedong wanted to destroy all non-communist beliefs so he destroyed Chinese art and classics and punished those who opposed him during a certain time.
Long March Communist Mao Zedong and 80,000 followers went to northern China, but only 8,000 survived.
Warlords A strong local military leader who takes advantage of political unrest to seize power in the area.
Zen Buddhism It emphasizes the relationship between student and teacher. Before being called its name now it was originally called Chan Buddhism.
World Trade Organization (WTO) An international organization established rules for manufactures in all member counties.
Dynasty A line of rulers who belong to the same family.
Mao Zedong's Little Red Book A book of selected statements from speeches and writings of the former leader of Chinese Communist Party(Mao Zedong).It is among the most distributed books during the cultural revolution.
Porcelain A type of ceramic material that is hard and white.
Deng Xiaoping leader of China After Mao Zedong died this person took over his leadership.
Paper currency weighed less and made it easier to trade. What was one reason that trade improved during the Song Dynasty?
Money was being spent to repair the Great Wall of China, and didn't want to trade with foreign counties. Why did shipbuilding and ocean voyages end during the Ming Dyansty?
