Decline feudalism

Question / Answers of the decline of the feudalism

QuestionAnswer
What did the plague do to the population of Europe? What percent of population died? 24 million Europeans died; China's population was reduced by half. Approximately 33% of the world’s population died.
How did the plague affect the feudal system? The need for workers was high, but there were fewer workers due to the plague. Many peasants left manors and moved to towns and cities to seek better job opportunities. This weakened the manor system
What was the English Peasants' War?What was the English Peasants' War? The peasants entered London and presented their demands for more rights to King Richard II. The leader of the rebellion was killed and the revolt lost its momentum. The time was coming for feudalism to come to an end.
Reason for the war: England and France fought a series of wars over control of lands in France. in France as their own fiefs. When King Philip VI of France claimed fiefs that belonged to King Edward III of England were his, war broke out between the two countries.

Impact of the war on feudalism: The war helped shift the power from feudal lords to monarchs and common people. Monarchs on both sides had collected taxes and raised large professional armies. Therefore, kings no longer relied on nobles to supply knights for the army.
On military technology: Knights and castles were less useful. The invention of the longbow(bow and arrow) was effective against knights on horses. Armies learned to use gunpowder to shoot iron cannon balls through castle walls.
On nationalism: There was a new feeling of nationalism which shifted power away from the lords. Before the war, many peasants felt more loyal to their local lords than their king. Now there was a sense of national unity
On peasants: During the war, peasants were forced to serve in the army and pay heavy taxes often. Those who survived the war were needed as soldiers and workers. Because of this, they were able to have greater power and influence over their own lives.
What did he do? Henry also issued a document that spelled out the king's traditional rights, one being trying clergy accused of serious crimes in a royal court instead of church court.
