What did Henry II do? He insisted a jury to formally accuse someone of crime and heard before a royal judge.
What problems did Henry II cause? This led to a serious conflict with the church, it lead to a quarrel between Henry and Thomas Becket.
Who was King John? He was King Henry II's younger son.
What did King John do to "make enemies"? He lost most of the lands the English controlled in France. He also taxed his nobles heavily and ignored their right. He also fought with the church and collected money from church properties.
How did the nobles address these problems? The barons forced a meeting with King John and made him sign the Magna Carta.
What did the Magna Carta do? The Magna Carta was an agreement between the nobles and the king.
Why was the Magna Carta historically important? It became important to history because it became the foundation for the rights and freedoms of English men and women.
Describe the Model Parliament King Edward I began to include more people in government. It included commoners, lower-ranking clergy, and nobles.
How did these events lead to the decline of Feudalism? 1. Power was shifting from the lords to the monarchs. 2. Power began shifting towards the common people.
Where did The Black Death begin? In central Asia, possibly China.
Where did The Black Death spread? Throughout China, India, and Europe. It traveled along the Silk Road,
What were The Black Death symptoms? Fever, Vomiting. coughing and sneezing, and egg sized swelling and bumps.
What contributed to the spread of the plague? The dirty conditions caused the plague to spread. The bacteria were carried by fleas on rats.
How did The Black Death affect the Jews? Why? Many people blamed the Jews for the plague, and prejudice led to many being persecuted and forced to leave cities and countries.
What did the plague do to the population of Europe? What percent of population died? 24 million Europeans died; China's population was reduced by half, 33% died.
How did the plague affect the feudal system? The need for workers was high but there were fewer workers due to the plague. Many peasants left manors and moved to towns and cities to seek better job opportunities.
What was the English Peasants' War? The peasants entered London and presented their demands for more rights to King Richard II. The leader of the rebellion was killed and the revolt lost its momentum.
Reason for The Hundred Years' War? When King Phillip VI of France claimed fiefs that belonged to King Edward III of England were his, war broke out between the two countries.
Joan of Arc- What's her story? Joan of Arc was a 17- year old French peasant girl who claimed she heard voices of saints urging her to save France during the Hundred Years' War. She put a suit of armor and went to fight Joan led a French army to victory at Orleans.
Impact of The Hundred Years' War on feudalism The war helped shift the power from feudal lords to monarch and common people.
Impact of The Hundred Years' War on military technology Knight and castles were less useful. The invention of the longbow was effective against knights on horses, Armies learned to use gunpowder
Impact of The Hundred Years' War on nationalism There was a new feeling of nationalism which shifted power away from the lords. Before the war, many peasants felt more loyal to their local lords then their king.
Impact of The Hundred Years' War on peasants During the war, many peasants were forced to serve in the army and pay heavy taxes often.
