"New South" Henry Grady came up with this phrase to represent the move to industries after the Civil War and the early 1900s.
Leo Frank He was accused of murdering Mary Phagan. He went from execution to life in prison and then the Knights of Mary Phagan lynched him.
boll weevil The insect that invaded Georgia in the early 1900s, hurting the cotton and was one of the reason Georgians and other Southerners experienced a depression before other parts of the United States.
The Lend-Lease Act This law allowed the United States government to send military supplies to Europe, making the United States part of World War II before Pearl Harbor.
Ellis Arnall He was the governor who abolished the poll tax and lowered the voting age to 18.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He is known for being a major civil rights leader, believing in nonviolence, leading the Albany Movement, and giving the “I Have a Dream” speech on the March on Washington.
1996 Olympics This event brought businesses and tourists to Atlanta, but it was interrupted by a bomb.
Checks and balances This system makes no one branch becomes too powerful.
state representative Qualifications: You have to be 21, live in the state of Georgia for 2 years, your district for one year, and be a US citizen.
lieutenant governor He is president of the Senate and can take over for the governor if the governor can no longer serve.
civil case This is an argument/dispute between two or more people or groups in court. There is no actual crime.
counties These are districts/subdivisions of the state set up to enforce government laws.
seven deadly sins or seven most delinquent behaviors If you commit one of these, you can be tried as an adult.
John Pemberton, Asa Candler, and Robert Woodruff These men are the entrepreneurs who developed Coca-Cola.
entrepreneurs people who take a risk when starting a business in order to make a profit
credit allowing someone to purchase something without paying for it immediately on the promise that they will pay eventually. Examples are car loans, home mortgage loans, and credit cards.
