Most southerners believed that Lincoln would do what once he was in office? Abolish slavery
Lincoln's main goal as President was to do what? Preserve the Union
List the four border states that did not secede from the Union. Delaware, Kentucky, Missouri, and Maryland
Most people in Missouri and Maryland favored what side? The South. Thus, Lincoln sent troops to occupy the state of Missouri and declared martial law in Maryland.
How many states seceded from the Union to create the Confederacy? eleven
What were some advantages for the North during the Civil War? More factories, people, farmland, etc....
What were some advantages for the South during the Civil War? Fighting in their own territory and their officers were considered superior.
What was the main goal of the Union blockade? Dissrupt and prevent trade of goods from coming in and going out
What was the result of the First Battle of Bull Run? A confederate victory....many union soldiers panicked and fled the battle
What was an Ironclad? warship covered with protective iron plates
When did Lincoln issue the Emancipation Proclamation? Jan 1, 1863
Why didn't Lincoln free the slaves at the beginning of the Civil War? He feared that the border states would secede from the Union.
What does "emancipation" mean? setting free
Why were railroads an important resource during the Civil War? Trains could move supplies and troops needed during the war
Who was Dredd Scott? A slave whose case for freedom went before the Supreme Court
What was Dredd Scott's argument? He should be set free because his owner had brought him and lived in a state where slavery was illegal.
What was the South's war strategy going into the Civil War? Fight in their own territory and trade and finance the war through cotton sales in Europe.
What were the wear strategies of the North? Blockade, control of the Mississippi river, capture capitol of Richmond, VA.
Who shot and killed Lincoln? John Wilkes Booth
What Union General was famous for his destructive "March to the Sea?" General Sherman
"Four score and seven years ago, " is how long? 87 years
