| refugees | A person who has left their country in order to escape war, persecution, or famine. |
| communism | an economic and political system on a national level in the Soviet Union |
| Capitalism | an economic system that encourages citizens to own businesses and proporty |
| Iron Curtain | the closing of Eastern Europe from western europe |
| Cold War | A conflict that was between the US and the Soviet Union. The nations never directly confronted each other on the battlefield but deadly threats went on for years. |
| Propaganda | the spreading of beliefs or ideas to gain support for a cause |
| McCarthism | political bullying of innocent people |
| arms race | competition between nations to gain an advantage in weapons |
| Cuban Missile Crises | Cuba wanted nuclear bombs but U.S. said no but soviet un said yes U.S. stopted the trade |
| proxy wars | capitalist and communist forces battling each other |
| Korean War | The conflict between Communist North Korea and Non-Communist South Korea. The United Nations (led by the United States) helped South Korea. |
| Guerrillas | Small groups of soldiers, often volunteers, who make surprise attacks and raids behind enemy lines |
| Vietnam War | (1954-1975) a prolonged war between the communist North Vietnam, supported by the Chinese, and the non-communist South Vietnam, supported by the US |
| Tet Offence | attack from the north vietnamese and viet cong to south vietnam, happened on chinese new year, attacked most major cities |
| arms control | a limitation on the size and armament of the armed forces of a country |
| embargo | A ban on trade |
| Diplomacy | the art and practice of conducting negotiations between nations without arousing hostility |
