7 Principles

The 7 Principles of the Constitution

TermDefinition
Checks and Balances Each branch of government exercises checks (or controls) over the other branches.
Federalism Power is divided between national government and state government.
Separation of Powers Government power is divided between the three branches.
Individual Rights Citizens of the United States are guaranteed rights under the US Constitution, state constitutions and federal law.
Limited Government The government may hold only the power granted to it by the US Constitution.
Popular Sovereignty A government in which the people give the government its power
