7 Principles
The 7 Principles of the Constitution
| Term | Definition |

| Checks and Balances | Each branch of government exercises checks (or controls) over the other branches. |
| Federalism | Power is divided between national government and state government. |
| Separation of Powers | Government power is divided between the three branches. |
| Individual Rights | Citizens of the United States are guaranteed rights under the US Constitution, state constitutions and federal law. |
| Limited Government | The government may hold only the power granted to it by the US Constitution. |
| Popular Sovereignty | A government in which the people give the government its power |
