| explorer | a person who travels to learn new things like Marco Polo or Christopher Columbus |
| journey | a trip (noun) or to travel (verb) |
| colony | a place that is ruled by another country like Jamestown, Virginia |
| settlement | a small community |
| colonist | a person who lives in a colony |
| Pilgrim | the name of the first colonists at Plymouth, many of whom belonged to religious group called the Puritans |
| independence | being free from the rule of another nation |
| hero | a person who does something brave or works hard to help others like Sitting Bull, Golda Meir, Jackie Robinson, Thomas, Edison or Albert Einstein |
| invention | something new that someone makes or thinks of |
| transportation | any way of moving things or people from one place to another like stagecoaches, streetcars, cars, buses or trucks |
| technology | the use of science to make things work better |
| communication | any way of sharing information like by mail, stagecoach, telegraph, or telephone |
