| Confederacy | Confederate States Of America formed by the 11 Sourthern states that seceded from the Union. |
| Union | Another name for the United States; the Northern states in the Civil War. |
| Assassination | The killing or murder of a high-ranking official or leader. |
| Political | Of or having to do with the government. |
| Political Party | Organized group of people who share similar views of what government should do. |
| Secede | To break away from |
| Secession Convention | Meeting hels in South Carolina. Thousands of South Carolinans met and votes to break away or secede from the United States or Union to start a new country. |
| Abolitionist | Aperson who worked to abolish or end slavery. |
| North | Refers to the states that remained in the Union or the United States. They did not support slavery. |
| South | Refers to the 11 states that seceded from the Union or United States. They supported slavery. |
| Battle of Gettysburg | The largest battle and turning point of the Civil War. The Union victory over the Confederate forces in 1863 near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania that ended General Lee's invasion of the North. |
| Gettysburg Address | Famous Civil War speech given by President Lincoln in 1863 at the site of the Battle of Gettysburg. Called for a united nation and an end to slavery. |
| Battle of Vicksburg | Union victory over Confederate forces in 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississppi, that split the Condederacy in two. |
| Total War | Method of warfare used by Union General William Sherman in which both the opposing army and an enemy's civilian population are targets. |
| Appomattox Court House, Virgina | Generals Grant and Lee met in a farmhouse in Appomattox on April 9, 1865 to discuss the terms of surrender. |
| Battle of Vicksburg | 1863- Confederate army surrendered after a long seige. Union gain full control of the Mississippi. |
| Battle of Chickamuga | 1863- Second highest casualties in the war. Most significant Union defeat in the west. |
| Battle of Manassas | Another name for the Battle of Bull Run. |
| Monitor vs Merrimack | Major naval battle; Confederate tried to break the blockade; First combat involving ironclad ships. |
| Fort Sumter | First shots fired at Fort Sumter. Marked the beginning of the Civil War. |
