American Revolutionary War Cause & Effect Book

French and English wanted natural resources and land west of the Appalachian Mountains French and Indian War 1754 to 1762
Once England won, Colonist wanted to settle on that land. The Native Americans didn't want colonists on their land. English Parliament passed a law that said that colonist couldn't settle on that land. Colonist were very angry.
English Parliament believed that colonist should help pay for the war. The English taxed the colonists.
British soldiers needed boarding (housing) and food English Parliament pass the Quartering Act which made it a law that colonists had to house the soldiers. Colonist were very angry.
England still needed more money, so they passed two new laws. 1. The Sugar Act 2. The Stamp Act Sugar Act- Colonists had to pay a tax on Molasses. Stamp Act- Colonists had to pay for a special stamp for all official documents and newspapers
Colonist were mad about the Stamp Act Colonists protested, burned piles of stamps in the streets and boycotted (refused to buy)stamps.
England's leaders stilled wanted to tax the colonists to pay for English troops living in the colonies. Colonist protested. 1767 - Parliament passed the Townshend Act which taxed goods such as paper, cloth, glass, lead and tea. Parliament repeals (took back) the Townshend Acts but kept the tax on tea.
Colonists were angry about the tax on tea. Colonists dumped tea off of a shop to protest. This event is called the Boston Tea Party.
Parliament was VERY angry about the Boston Tea Party. They made even more laws to punish the colonists. The colonists called these laws the Intolerable Acts. They couldn't have a town meeting and the Port of Boston was closed. Many colonist lost their jobs and went hungry.
Colonists were angry about all the laws and taxes when they had no say in making of the laws (No taxation without representation) They were sick ) Boston Massacre March 1770
Colonists unhappy about taxation without representation in Parliament. They formed the First Continental Congress in 1774 as a way to discuss their grievances (complaints)with England.
Colonists pleas (calls for help) were ignored by Parliament and King George III Colonists form the Second Continental Congress in 1775 and authorized (ok'd) a Continental Army.
