The Greek World Test

QuestionAnswer
Cyrus the Great Persian emperor; created the Persian Empire by conquering most of Southwest Asia. He let people he conquered keep their own customs so they wouldn't rebel.
Darius I Persian emperor; built roads and made other improvements to Persian society. He organized the empire by dividing it into 20 provinces, built new capital called Persepolis.
Xerxes I Persian ruler; tried to conquer Greece during the Persian Wars but was defeated.
Persian Wars a series of wars between Persia and Greece in 400s BC.
Cavalry a group of soldiers who ride on horses.
Alliance an agreement to work together
Peloponnesian War a war between Athens and Sparta in the 400s BC
Philip II Macedonian king; was a brilliant military leader who defeated the Greeks. Alexander the Great was his son. Fought as a phalanx
Phalanx a group of Greek warriors who stood close together in a square formation
Alexander the Great Macedonian ruler; one of the greatest military commanders in history. The son of Philip II, conquered large areas of Asia.
Hellenistic Greek-like-developed in Alexander the Great's empire (mixture of Egyptian, Syrian, and other cultures with Greek ideas).
Socrates Greek philosopher; teaching style was based on asking questions called Socratic Method. He was arrested and condemned to death for challenging the authority of the gods.
Plato Greek philosopher; started a school in Athens called the Academy and wrote The Republic.
Aristotle Greek philosopher; taught that people should live lives of moderation, balance and use reason in their lives
Euclid Greek mathematician; one of the greatest mathematicians in history. He is famous for his contributions to the field of geometry.
Hippocrates Greek doctor; regarded as the father of medicine. He tried to find out what caused diseases and is known today for his ideas on how doctors should conduct themselves
