Civil Rights Movement vocabulary

Prejudice a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason
Discrimination the unjust treatment of minorities
Racism the belief that members of a race posses certain qualities that make it inferior or superior
Segregation the enforced separation of different racial groups
Integration the intermixing of people or groups previously segregated
Boycott to withdraw from buying or handling something as an act of punish or protest
Civil disobedience the refuse to comply with certain laws as an act of protest
Poverty the state of being extremely poor
Medicare a federal system of health insurance for people over 65 years old and for people with disabilities
Medicaid a federal system of health insurance for those in financial trouble
Sit-in a form of protest in which participants occupy a place and refuse to leave until their demands are met
Feminist a person who supports feminism
Interstate a system of expressways covering the 48 mainland U.S. states
Hispanic a person Latin American descent
