Louis Pasteur middle 1800's- Fermentation of sugars into ethanol in yeast
Eduard(Nobel) and Hans Buchner 1897- Fermentation of sugars into ethanol in yeast extracts
James Sumner (Nobel) 1926- First person to show enzymes are proteins and first person to crystallize an enzyme (urease)
Emil Fischer (Nobel) 1890- Proposed "lock and key" model explaining enzyme/substrate relationship, first model explaining how enzyme works
Daniel Koshland 1958- Improved upon Fischer's model with his "Induced Fit " model: substrate binding induces conformational changes esp. in the active site
Leonor Michaelis and Maud Menten First two scientists to derive model describing enzyme kinetics.
