Chapter 7 Ancient Rome

| patrician | upper-class wealthy citizens |
| plebeian | ordinary citizens |
| consul | One of two officials who led the ancient Roman Republic. |
| veto | "I forbid" |
| dictator | a person in the ancient Roman Republic to rule for six months in times of emergency. Held all the powers of a king. |
| province | for the purpose of ruling, the Romans divided their region into areas. Each had their own governor. |
| aqueduct | a structure that carries water over a long distance |
| disciple | a follower of a person |
| Gospel | In the Christian bible the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. |
| Romulus and Remus | Twin brothers who killed the Etruscan king and founded Rome. |
| Roman values | loyalty and justice |
| Etruscans | Early rulers of Rome. We do not know much about them. |
| The Roman Senate | The most powerful part of the Roman government. |
| Julius Caesar | A strong Roman leader who conquered Gaul. He became a dictator. Eventually killed by the Senate. |
| Augustus | Took power after the death of Caesar. |
| The Five Good Emperors | Following a time of bad emperors, there were five good emperors. During this time each emperor would adopt someone to be his successor. |
| Colosseum | One of the greatest buildings in Rome. Place of gladiator fights, naval battles and circuses. |
| Wealthy Romans | Had nice homes in the city and country. Ate lavish meals. Owned slaves. |
| Gladiators | Slaves who were forced to fight to the death as entertainment for the people. |
| Roman's values for family | Father had absolute power over his household. |
| Slavery in Rome | Slavery was common in Rome. Most worked hard jobs in the silver mines. The more fortunate were household slaves. |
| Christianity vs. Roman Government | The Romans tortured the Christians. But overtime the popularity of Christianity grew. |
| Constantine | Emperor who encouraged the spread of Christianity |
| Corrupt Rulers | They were strong military leaders, but not good politicians. Used tax money for their own gain. |
| Mercenary Army | Paid soldiers who lacked loyalty to Rome |
| economic issues | As Rome lost some of its territories they also lost tax dollars. Had to raise taxes in their remaining provinces. |
| inflation | Lots of money, but its value is decreased. |
| Diocletian | He split the Empire into the East and West. He ruled the wealthier East and gave the West to a co-emperor. |
| The fall of Rome | Germanic tribes invaded Rome. East with more money survived. |
| Romulus Augustulus | The last Emperor of Rome. |
