| Iron curtain | the political, military, and ideological barrier erected by the Soviet Union after World War II to seal off itself and its dependent eastern and central European allies from open contact with the West and other noncommunist areas |
| Containment | ]strategic foreign policy pursued by the United States in the late 1940s and the early 1950s in order to check the expansionist policy of the Soviet Union. |
| Airlift | a system of transporting cargo or passengers by aircraft to or from an area otherwise impossible to reach |
| Cold War | a struggle over political differences (as of two nations) carried on by methods short of war and usually without breaking off diplomatic relations |
| Inflation | a continual increase in the price of goods and services |
| Closed shop | a place of work where membership in a union is a condition for being hired and for continued employment. |

| Subversion | the act of overthrowing : the state of being overthrown; especially : an attempt to overthrow or undermine a government or political system by persons working secretly within the country involved |
