| Soviet occupation in Europe | Communist armed forces controlled most of eastern and Central Europe and the eastern portion of Germany after WW!! |
| Marshall Plan | The United States' effort to rebuild Europe by giving them financial aid so that countries could strengthen their economies and resist communism. |
| Partition of Germany | Country divided into two parts: the western part was democratic and resumed self government after a few years of American, British, and French occupation. The eastern part was dominated by the Soviet Union and did not create democratic institutions |
| Occupation of Japan | After it surrendered, this country was occupied by American forces, it adopted a democratic form of government and became an ally of the United States. |
| United Nations | an organization formed near the end of WWII whose goal was to prevent future global wars |
| G.I. Bill | Congress gave educational, housing, and employment benefits to U.S. war veterans |
| Cold War | a state of tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union without actual fighting that divided the world into two camps (groups with separate loyalties) |
| communism | an economic system which values workers more than profits so the government takes over businesses |
| capitalism | an economic system which allows citizens to own and profit from the creation of their businesses |
| ideologies | guiding principals;the U.S. believed in democracy and capitalism, the Soviet Union was guided by communism under a dictatorship |
| Containment | the American policy of stopping the spread of communism by various means |
| defensive alliances | the democratic nations of Europe and the Americans had an agreement to protect one another if attacked;it was called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization; the communists of Eastern Europe formed a similar military group called the Warsaw Pact |
| domino theory | the idea that if one country in Southeast Asia was allowed to become communist, others would follow, it was used to justify Americans fighting in Vietnam |
| Berlin Wall | a structure build in 1962 by the communist East Germans to keep their citizens from fleeing to democratic West Berlin; this symbol of the Cold War was destroyed when the Soviet Union collapsed |
