| Pyongyang | the capital of communist North Korea |
| Reconstruction | the period after the Civil War in which the Southern states were allowed back into the United States |
| Robber Barons | negative name for rich industrialists of the late 19th century who made fortunes because of the lack of regulation of business at the time |
| Roe v. Wade | Supreme Court case that made abortion legal in the United States |
| Rosa Parks | lady who began the Montgomery Bus Boycott by refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a city bus |
| Rust Belt | area of the northeastern United States that once was home to heavy industry and now is largely abandoned-- ex. Flint, Michigan or Bethlehem, Pennsylvania |
| Samuel Gompers | powerful union boss and organizer who began the United Mine Workers union |
| Scalawag | negative term for a southerner who voted for the Republican Party |
| Sherman Antitrust Act | the first legislation designed to bust trusts-- it was rather weak |
| Spanish American War | War begun by the U.S. against Spain at the turn of the 20th century-- nicknamed the "Splendid Little War" |
| Speculation | the process of buying stocks without regard to market conditions in an effort to "get rich quick" |
| suburbs | areas outside central cities to which many people wished to move after WWII-- made possible by the Interstate Highway system, among other things |
| suffrage | the right to vote |
| Sun Belt | the area of the American South and Southwest to which many Americans and many industries have relocated in recent years |
| tariff | a tax on imports-- ex. Hawley-Smoot |
| Tet Offensive | an offensive begun by the North Vietnamese resulting in the conclusion by the Americans that the Vietnam War would not be won easily, if at all |
| Trail of Tears | the route by which the Five Civilized Tribes were forcibly moved to new territory, mostly in Oklahoma-- so called because of the many people who died along it |
| Transcontinental Railroad | project that made it much more simple and quick to get from the east end of the country to the west and vice versa |
| Treaty of Versailles | the deeply flawed treaty that ended WWI |
| Unrestricted Submarine Warfare | a German tactic used in WWI that caused the US to enter the war |
| USS Maine | ship, the sinking of which led to the declaration of the Spanish-Amerian War |
| Vietnam War | conflict fought in southeast Asia as a result of President Johnson's worries concerning the Domino Theory, among other things |
| VE Day/VJ Day | the respective days on which the Nazis and the Japanese surrendered to the US |
| Zimmerman Note | a note from the German ambassador to Mexico asking for their help in WWI against the US-- helped get the US involved in the war |
