Dawes Act Congressional legislation that ordered the assimilation of Native Americans into white culture
Deficit Spending the practice of spending more money than is collected in taxes for a short time in order to stimulate the economy-- an idea of John Maynard Keynes
Dictatorship form of government in which one person has absolute control-- ex. Hitler
Domino Theory the idea that if one country turns communist, so will all its neighbors
Ellis Island the main processing center for immigrants coming to the East coast of the US
Embargo the practice of refusing to accept particular products from a country in order to put economic and/or political pressure on that country
Espionage and Sedition Acts acts passed during WWI limiting speech and placing additional scrutiny on foreign individuals-- violated the 1st Amendment
Eugene Debs socialist activist and politician who ran for president several times and was also jailed under the Sedition Act for his speeches
Farmers Alliance midwestern organization of agricultural workers who tried to influence prices for crops, among other agricultural issues
FDIC insures people's bank deposits so they don't disappear if a bank fails.
Federal Reserve System The central bank of the U.S.-- it controls the money supply for the country
First Hundred Days the early part of the FDR administration in which Congress passed many laws suggested by Roosevelt to fight the Depression
Fourteen Points the series of policies Woodrow Wilson tried to get placed in the Versailles Treaty after WWI--many of them were not enforceable
Gentleman's Agreement the agreement made by TR limiting Asian immigration to the US in exchange for desegregating California schools
Gilded Age a period in American society known for big changes in the economy toward industrialism-- and for the problems that change caused
Gold Standard the practice of backing paper currency with an equal value in gold
Great Migration the large movement of African Americans out of the South to Northern and Midwestern cities in search of more opportunity and less racism--happened during WWI
Great Society Lyndon Johnson's massive program to end poverty and the effects of racism in the U.S.
Gross Domestic Product the sum total of the value of all goods produced in a country in a given year
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution the legislation President Johnson got passed in order to get approval to send US combat troops to Vietnam
Hawley Smoot Tariff the tariff passed by Congress in the 20's that had the effect of reducing world trade by 40%--helped bring on the Great Depression
Hoovervilles shantytowns built during the Great Depression by people who had lost their jobs and homes
Hull House the first settlement house established by Jane Addams in Chicago
Immigration Act of 1924 the Congressional legislation that severely limited immigration in the US
Imperialism the idea that a stronger country may take over a weaker country for strategic or economic reasons
