| Appeasement | Giving to an enemy’s demands in the hope of maintaining peace |
| Munich Pact | Agreement between France, Britain and Germany that allowed Hitler to annex the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia in exchange for no more aggression on Germany’s Part |
| Nonaggression Pact | Agreement between Stalin and Hitler that neither would attack the other and would eventually split Poland |
| Totalitarianism | Government type with marked by total control of a society, government and Military. |
| Fascism | Government type that is extremely nationalistic where the state comes first and controls all aspects of society |
| Nazism | Extremely Nationalist government in Germany marked by a belief in racial superiority of Nordic and Aryan peoples |
| Militarism | Government type marked by total control by the Army and Navy leaders |
| Dictator | A person with total control in a country |
| Axis Powers | Name given to Germany, Italy and Japan in WWII |
| Allies | Name given to Britain, the USSR, France, the USA, Canada and Australia in WWII |
| Neutrality Acts | Laws passed by congress that made it illegal to sell any war material to any side in WWII in an attempt to keep the US out of the war |
| Lend-Lease Act | Law that allowed Britain to borrow or rent war material instead of buying it got around the neutrality acts |
| Rationing | Going without gas, meat, milk, sugar, coffee etc. in order to support the war effort |
| War Productions Board | Federal agency that oversaw the conversion of US industries from retail to war production |
| Executive order 9066 | Law passed that led to Japanese Americans being put into internment camps because of a fear of spying and sabotage |
| Korematsu v. US | Supreme Court case that found the removal of Japanese Americans during war is constitutional |
| Rosie the Riveter | The symbolic leader of women in the workforce during WWII |
| Women’s Army Corps | The branch of the Army set aside for women who served as nurses, and pilots who flew planes from production to bases |
| Double V Campaign | a movement where black leaders in the US tried to promote the dual goal of combatting the Nazi’s and racism |
| War Refugee Board | Agency created to manage Jewish refugees in Europe and the USA |
| Zoot Suit Riots | Riots in Los Angeles in 1943 between Mexican Americans Sailors and Marines |
| Tuskegee Airmen | Group of African American Fighter Pilots who had one of the best success rates in WWII |
| Blitzkrieg | Tactics used by Germany where planes, tanks and infantry overwhelm and enemy: Lightning War |
| The Blitz | The name given to the firebombing of England and London during WWII in an attempt to make the English surrender |
| The Battle of Britain | Air battle over England where the Royal Air Force shot down many German planes and held off an invasion of Britain by Germany |
| Battle of Stalingrad | Huge victory for the USSR over the Nazi’s in WWII sent the Germans into retreat |
| Battle of the Bulge | Battle where the 101st Airborne was surrounded but held on to protect a vital road complex against a vastly superior German force for over a month |
| D-Day | Invasion of Normandy in 1944 opened a two -front war on the European continent |
| European Theater | Name given to the War in Europe against Germany and Italy |
| The Final Solution | Name given by the Nazi’s for the extermination of Jews, gypsies, political prisoners |
| Pearl Harbor | Sneak attack on the US base in Hawaii led us into the war and decimated the US fleet |
| Battle of Midway | Turning point in the Pacific that stopped Japan from gaining territory and made them focus of defense |
| Guadalcanal | First American victory in the Pacific provided a huge boost to morale |
| Iwo Jima | Bloodiest battle in the Pacific gave the US an airbase where damaged bombers could land on their way back from bombing Tokyo; made the US see that invading Japan would be very costly |
| Battle of Okinawa | Last major battle in the Pacific and helped lead the US to drop the Atomic bomb on Japan |
| Pacific Theater | Name given to the area of the world where the Allies fought the Japanese |
| Island hopping | Tactic of jumping from one Island to another in the Pacific thereby avoiding heavily defended Islands |
| Manhattan Project | Name given to the secret Atomic Bomb program in the USA |
| Adolf Hitler | Anti-semitic dictator of Germany |
| Josef Stalin | Paranoid, megalomaniac leader of the USSR |
| Hideki Tojo | Military commander and main ruler of Japan |
| Harry Truman | President who took over after the Death of FDR made the decision to drop the Atomic Bomb on Japan |
| Benito Mussolini | Fascist leader of Italy, wanted to bring back the modern Roman Empire |
| Franklin Delano Roosevelt | Charismatic and popular leader of the USA during WWII |
