New England Colonies

Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Pilgrims A member of the group that rejected the chruch of England, sailed to America, and founded the Plymouth Colony in 1620.
Puritans A member of a group from England that settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630 and sought to reform the practices of the Church of England.
Mayflower Compact An agreement established by the men who sialed to America on the Mayflower, which was called for laws of the good of the colony and set forth the idea of self government.
Great Migration The movement of Puritans from England to Establish settlements around the world.
King Philips War A war between the Puritan colonies and Native Americans in 1675-1676.
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut Set laws that were established in 1639 by a Purtian congregation who had settled in the Connecticut Valley that expanded the idea of representative government.
Roger Williams A minister who left Massachusetts Bay Colony and founded the colony of Rhode Island.
Anne Hutchinson A woman forced to leave Massachusetts Bay Colony; believed a person could worship God without a minister's help.
Why did the Salem witchcraft trials begin? Girls were told a story by a slave about witches and the girls acted as if they were bewitched and accused people of being witches.
Why did the Puritans leave England? They wanted to "purify" the Church of England.
Where did Roger Williams go after he left the Puritan colonies? To Rhode Island to start a new colony.
