What is the purpose of the Preamble to the Constitution? To explain the goals of the new constitution. (6 goals)
What are the first 3 words to the Preamble? "We the People"
Why are the three words, "We the people" so Important to the constitution? To show a symbol of democracy.
Why was the word prosperity used in the preamble? To show that it will benefit future generations.
What is meant by "separation of powers"? That all three branches off government are equal.
What are the three branches of the federal government? Legislature, executive, and Judicial.
Which branch makes the laws? Legislature
Which branch carries out the laws? Executive
WHich branch interprets the laws? Judicial.
What are the two houses which make up the Legislative branch? Senate & House of Representatives.
How man members are in the House of Representatives? 435 members
Hoe old do you have to be to run for house of representatives? 25 years old.
How long is a House of Reps term be for? 2 years.
Who leads the House of representatives? Speaker of the house
How many members are int he senate? 100
How old do you have to be to run for senate? 30 years old.
How long do senates term last? 6 years
Who leads the senate? Majority Leader.
Why did the constitutional framers put age limits on reps and senators? They wanted someone who had experience in government.
What is a bill? An un-passed law
In which house of congress can a bill be introduced? Either House
What happens to a bill before it goes to the president? HOR-Senate-President (Goes through both houses) OR Senate-HOR-President
What happens to a bill if either house does not approve it? Stop and does not go to the president. AKA: Dead bill
What is a veto? President says no to a bill
What is an override? 2/3 of both houses have to agree and 3/4th of all the states have to agree.
What has to happen to override a veto? 2/3 of both houses have to agree and 3/4th of all the states have to agree.
Why is the process to make a bill into a law so long and complex? Because 3/4th of the states have to agree and it can affect the whole entire country.
Who is head of the executive branch? The president.
Who is second in command in the executive branch? The vice president.
How old do you have to be to run for president? 35 years old.
What other requirements is there to be run for president? US born citizen
How long does a presidents term last? 4 years.
Name 3 roles of president. Commander in chief, chief of state, and chief legislature.
What group heads the judicial branch? Supreme Court
what are the individuals in the supreme court called? Justices
How many justices are there? 9 justices.
Who appoints justices to the supreme court? President
WHo approves justices to the Supreme Court? Senate (Congress)
How long do justices serve? For Life.
What are checks and balances? To balance branches to make sure one does not gain too much power
Name a check that the legislature branch has on the executive branch? Appoints presidential appointments and to override presidential veto
Name a check that the executive branch has on the legislative branch? Appoints justices and to gran pardons
Name a check that the judicial has on the legislative branch? To make sure things are constitutional and to have judicial review.
What is an amendment? An addition to the constitution.
What are the first 10 amendments called? Bill of rights.
How many states must agree in order to amend the constitution? 38/50 states.
Why did the constitution framers make the amending process so difficult? Put lots of restrictions and extreme concequesnces.
Name the five freedoms protected by the first amendment. Religion, assembly, Press, Political, and speech. (RAPPS)
Why was the 1734 trial of Josh Peter Zenger important. Wrote wrong info but used Freedom of press and religion to back him up
What was our first plan of government? Articals of Confederation
How did the representaition in government work under the first plan? Amount of taxes based on population and only 1 vote in government per state.
Name 4 weaknesses that the government had on the first plan? Each state only had one vote, Congress could not tax, No major "court system", no executive branch to enfore laws.
Who was Daniel shays? An american revolution vetran got agry about nopt being paid and started a rebellion.
What caused shays rebellion? Angry about not being paid back for his service int he revolutionary war so he backfired.
What did shays rebellion prove to the country? That he was brave and no afraid to back down.
What 3 states had the largest population? Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
What 3 states had the smallest population? Delaware,Connecticut, and Massuchusetts
Where and when was the constitutional convention held? 1787 and in Philidephia.
Why was the constitutional convention held? To create a strong cental government.
Who was elected by the delagates to preside over the constitutional convention? George Washington
Why was George Washingtons presence so important? Becasue he was anonomusly appointed to be in office and he was a good leader.
Who was the oldest person at the convention? Benjamin Franklin, 81.
Who did not attend the constitutional convedntion? John Adams and Thomas Jefferson
What was the Virginia Plan? Give states amount of votes based on population.
What was the New Jersey plan? 1 vote per state no matter the size.
Which state supported the Virginia Plan? Larger states.
Which states supported the New Jersey plan? Smaller states.
What was the great compromise? Create 2 houses. One senate and HOR. HOR based on population, and senate 2 votes per state.
Which states wanted to count slaves toward their population? Souther states.
Why did the souther state want slaves to be a part of their population? Becasue majority of the populationw were slaves.
What was the 3/5th compromise? Allow 3/5ths of slaves be counted towards their population.
What was decided on the Slave trade compromise? Didnt decide would decide in anouther 20 years and waited.
What is Federalim? The federal principle or system of government.
List two powers that the nation government has? Print money and declare war
List two powers that the state government has? Issue Lisencwe provoide public safty and health
what major powers do both State and National government have? Creating and Collecting taxes
Why did the framers include federalism in the constitution? They wanted to divide up the power between the nation and the state government.
What happens if a state and the national government dissagree on an issue? Court sysytem uses the constitution to see who is correct
Why were the federalist papers written To prove the radification of the constitution.

How many states needed to approve the constitution before it could take effect? 9 states
How did the federalists finally get the anifederalist to accept the constitution? By promisng to make the bill of rights.
What is the 1st ammedment? Freedom of press, speech religion and petition.
What is the 2nd ammendment? Right to keep and bare arms
Whta is the 3rd ammendment? No quartering soldgers.
What is the 4th ammendment? No search without a warrent
What is the 5th ammendment? gives people the right to choose not to testify in court if they feel their own testimony will incriminate themselves.
What is the 6th ammendment? guarantees a speedy trial by a jury of one's peers.
zwhat is the 7th ammendment?x provides that civil cases also be tried by jury.
What is the 8th ammendment? prohibits excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishments.
What is the 9th ammendment? states that the list of rights described in the Constitution is not exhaustive, and that the people still have all the rights that are not listed.
What is the 10th ammendment? gives all powers not specifically given to the United States government in the Constitution, to either the states or to the people.
