Waiting for the Rains: The Effects of Monsoons in South Asia

| atmospheric pressure | air sinks in high-pressure areas and few clouds form; air rises in low-pressure areas to form clouds that produce rain |
| monsoon | a seasonal wind; in the summer in South Asia, these winds usually bring rain |
| orographic effect | the precipitation that occurs when moist air rises up the side of a mountain; as the air rises, it cools down and releases most of its moisture as rain or snow |
| rain shadow | a dry area on the downwind side of a mountain |
| peninsula | the Indian subcontinent is a large one |
| atmosphere | the layer of air that surrounds Earth |
| upwind | against the direction that the wind is blowing |
| downwind | in the direction that the wind is blowing |
| delta | the triangle-shape deposit of sand and sediment that occurs where a river flows into an ocean |
