Antebellum Vocab.

| Slave State | A state that has allowed slavery |
| Free State | A state that does not allow slavery |
| States' Rights | The rights and powers are held first rather than the governmen's. |
| Missouri Compromise | in 1820, Missouri became a state even though it crossed above the line. ( between the north and the south ) |
| Underground Railroad | A set of many secret trails leading slaves from the South to North. ( typically it was through houses and boats, and use at night, although they were used during the day ) |
| Compromise of 1850 | A set of five laws meant to settle disputes between the North and the South. |
| Popular Sovereignty | Our right to vote. |
| Insurrection | A violent uprising/rebellion against the authority or government. |
| Treason | The crime of betraying one's own country. |
| Martyr | A person who is killed because of their religious beliefs. |
| Secede | To withdraw formally from a membership with a federal alliance. |
| Confederate States of America | The Southern states which have been defined as slave states. |
| Platform | A declared policy of a political party or group. |
| Moderate | A person with less extreme views on a situation. |
| Mandate | An official order to do something. |
| Agrarian | A person who advocates the/a redistribution of a land or property. |
