States Rights The priciple that the rights of the states should take precendure over the rights of the federal government
Missouri Compromise Compromise in 1820 that made Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state
Underground Railroad A network of houses and other places used to help slaves from the South escape to the North
Compromise of 1850 A number of bills passed that allowed CA to become part of the Union, determined some states areas, and discussed slavery
Popular Sovereignty The right of those living in a teriitory to decide upon an issue such on whether to allow slavery
