Australia Vocabulary

coral reef A formation of rock-like material made up of the skeletons of tiny marine creatures.
assimilation The process by which one group takes on the cultural traits of another.
primary industry Industry involving the collection of resources from nature, such as fishing.
secondary industry Industry that involves the use of resources to create new products, as occurs in manufacturing.
tertiary industry The segment of the economy that provides services to its consumers.
ethnocentrism An attitude that one’s own social or cultural group is better than others.
ozone layer The layer of the atmosphere that filters out most of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.
Ring of Fire A large area where tectonic plate boundaries surround the Pacific Ocean rim that contains many active volcanoes.
Aborigine The original inhabitants of Australia.
drought A long period of extremely dry weather.
climate change The long-term significant change to a region’s average weather.
Antarctic Treaty An agreement signed by 12 countries in 1959 that preserves Antarctica for peaceful and scientific use.
atoll A ring-shaped coral island enclosing a body of water.
Maori The original inhabitants of New Zealand and the Cook Islands.
coup The sudden violent overthrow of a government, often by the military.
