What is a dictator? It is an absolute ruler of a country who uses force and fear to keep himself and his friends in power and can effectively make laws all by himself.
Who is Benito Mussolini? He was the leader of the National Fascist Party in Italy during World War II.
Who is Adolf Hitler? He was the leader of Nazi Germany during World War II.
How was military aggression used by dictators in World War II? It was used against the rest of Europe to secure the dictator's goals.
Who is Josef Stalin? He was the dictator leader of the Soviet Union (USSR).
What is fascism? It is a kind of government where the country is considered more important than any one person, group, or freedom. Its ruler is called a leader and has total control.
What is communism? It is a political way of thinking based upon socialism. In a communist country their is no private property.
What is a militaristic government? A government in which the military rules.
Which countries were part of the Axis Powers during World War II? Germany, Italy, and Japan
What is the policy of appeasement? It says that we will give you what you like as long as we don't fight.
What are air raids? They were air attacks by planes that would drop bombs on land and ships.
What happened during the Battle of Britain? The Axis Powers continuously bombed England.
What does conquest mean? It is when a country invades another country in the hopes of taking it over and ruling it.
What country became the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR)? Russia
What does neutrality mean? It means that a country does not side with any of the countries involved in a conflict.
What does superior race mean? It is the idea that one group of people is superior or better to other people because of their heritage.
What did Adolf Hitler believe about the Germany people? He believed that the German people were a superior race, and were better than all other people.
What does punitive mean? It means to act as a punishment.
What does avenge mean? It means to inflict punishment or cause suffering as retribution or revenge
What does nationalism mean? It is a way of thinking that says that my country is better than any other.
What does prosperity mean? It is the state of being wealthy.
What countries were part of the Allied Powers or the Allies during World War II? United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union
What is D-Day? The Allies invaded the beaches of Normandy against the Germans. This massive invasion led to the surrender of the Axis Powers in Europe.
What was the purpose of the island-hopping strategy in the Pacific theater? Its purpose was to strategically take Japanese held islands in order to move closer so that American planes could bomb Japan in preparation of an invasion of the Japanese occupied islands.
What are casualties? They are the people in the armed forces who are killed, wounded or missing in action.
What is an atomic bomb? It is a very destructive bomb. Its power comes from the great amount of energy released when atoms are split.
Where were the first atomic bombs dropped during World War II? The United States dropped two bombs, one on Hiroshima and a second on Nagasaki.
What caused the Japanese to surrender and brought about the end of World War II? The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the war.
What was the goal of Japan's militaristic government? It wanted to expand its nation's power in the Far East.
How did European leaders try to avoid World War II? They responded to Hitler's aggression with the policy of appeasement and gave in to his demands.
What was Hitler's goal during World War II? He wanted Germany to avenge itself for the way his country was treated following World War I. He wanted to take over Europe and maybe even the world.
What was the goal of the Allies during World War II? Their goal was to stop the Axis Powers and defeat them so that they could not invade other countries again.
What was the purpose of the Allies landing in North Africa (Operation Torch)? Its purpose was to free the Mediterranean Sea from German control, protect the oil fields of the Middle East,and to take some of the pressure off of the USSR that was taking heavy losses as it was being invaded by Germany.
