Constructivism
Comm Theories Chap 7
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Constructivism | theory that describes, explains, and predicts individual thought, or cognition; maintains that individuals develop and use cognitive structures to organize meaning |
| Cognitive Schemata | tools that help us organize perception and thought about others and relationships; mini systems of understanding: prototypes, personal constructs, stereotypes and scripts |
| Prototypes | the clearest case or best example of a category |
| Personal Constructs | mental yardsticks that allow us to measure something along particular dimensions of thought; bipolar dimensions of judgement that are cognitive tools we use to define how specific people measure up on particular qualities |
| Stereotypes | generalizations about people or experiences; predictions of what a person will do based on our belief about the group we have used to classify them |
| Scripts | our guides for action; views of what is an expected or appropriate sequence of activities in particular situations |
| Cognitive Complexity | how elaborate or complex a person's interpretive processes are along the three dimensions of differentiation, abstraction and organization |
| Differentiation | how many distinct interpretations an individual uses to perceive and describe others |
| Abstraction | extent to which an individual interprets others in terms of internal motives, personality traits, and character |
| Organization | degree to which individuals notice and are able to make sense of contradictory interpretations |
| Person-Centeredness | capability of a cognitively complex person to engage in sensitive communication that is tailored to particular others. |
| Criticisms of Constructivism | internal validity is questionable, pragmatic utility is weak, theoretical scope neglects communication |
