| Sign | has a clear physical referent |
| Symbol | abstract (not concrete), arbitrary (no intrinsic relation to what it represents), and ambiguous (less than clear cut) |
| Symbolic Interactionism | individuals can acquire identity only by interacting with others; we learn the language and perspectives of our social communities |
| Tabula Rasa | the mind is a "clean slate" before it receives language; we have neither mind or selves at birth |
| Mind | ability to use symbols that have common social menaing |
| Self | ability to reflect on ourselves from the perspective of others; looking glass self |
| I | impulsive, creative, spontaneous part of ourselves; unburdened by social rules |
| Me | socially conscious part of the self who reflects on the I's impulses and actions |
| Role Taking | process of internalizing others' perspectives and viewing experience from their perspectives |
| Particular Others | individuals significant to us; we gain an understanding of what things mean to them. |
| Derivative Power | to give someone power |
| Generalized Other | the viewpoint of a social group, community, or social group as a whole |
| Criticisms of Symbolic Interactionism | theory has conceptual inconsistencies; too vague and too broad;neglects self-esteem |
