Symbols | include language, nonverbals, art and music |
Meanings | significance conferred on experiences and phenomenon |
Hierarchy of Meaning | Content, Speech Act, Episode, Relational, Autobiography and Cultural Pattern (C.S.E.R.A.C) |

Logical Force | degree to which we feel obligated to act or not act in a certain way; extent to which we feel certain actions are logical, appropriate, or required in specific situations |
Strange Loops | internal conversations by means individuals become trapped in destructive patterns of thinking |
Rules Theory/Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM) | individuals create meanings by relying on an organized system of meanings in which higher levels contextualize lower levels of meaning |
Critisismns of CMM Theory | unclear meaning of "rule", too ambiguous, too broad in scope |
Noise | anything that distorts or interferes with communication within a system; components: physical, physiological, semantic, psychological |
Problem of Human Communication | we never are 100% sure what another person is thinking, especially when there is no frame of reference |
