Comm & Rules Theory

Comm Theories Ch 1/7

TermDefinition
Communication* communication is a systemic process in which individuals interact with and through symbols to create and interpret meaning.
Systemic communication takes place within multiple contexts (i.e: gender, culture, personal history, social location
Process each utterance refutes, affirms, supplements and relies on the others, presuposes them to be known, and somehow take them into account; communication is ongoing and always in motion
Symbols include language, nonverbals, art and music
Meanings significance conferred on experiences and phenomenon
Hierarchy of Meaning Content, Speech Act, Episode, Relational, Autobiography and Cultural Pattern (C.S.E.R.A.C)
Content Meaning Level what words are being used
Speech Act Level the action emphasis of your speech (ie: to plead, to demand, to joke, etc).
Episode Level recurring routine of interaction that is structured by rules and has boundaries
Relational Meaning Level somewhat scripted ways we interact with particular other; how much acknowledgement is present between the parties; perceived respect; power dynamic
Autobiography Level individual's view of self that both shapes and is shaped by communication
Cultural Pattern Level understanding of speech acts, episodes, relationships, and autobiographies that is shared by particular social groups or societies
Constitutive Rules rules that tell us what certain actions mean, reflected by our cultural groups rather than universal meanings
Regulative Rules rules that tell us when it is appropriate to do certain things and what we should do next in the interaction
Logical Force degree to which we feel obligated to act or not act in a certain way; extent to which we feel certain actions are logical, appropriate, or required in specific situations
Strange Loops internal conversations by means individuals become trapped in destructive patterns of thinking
Rules Theory/Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM) individuals create meanings by relying on an organized system of meanings in which higher levels contextualize lower levels of meaning
Critisismns of CMM Theory unclear meaning of "rule", too ambiguous, too broad in scope
Noise anything that distorts or interferes with communication within a system; components: physical, physiological, semantic, psychological
Problem of Human Communication we never are 100% sure what another person is thinking, especially when there is no frame of reference
