World's Columbian Exhibition 1893. Chicago. Fairgrounds designed by Daniel Burnham. Incorporated principles of City Beautiful movements including bright white buildings. Fairgrounds called White City.
Regional Plan for New York 1929. Used "neighborhood unit concept" = constructed along a walkable scale, ped friendly. Neighborhood units contained about 6,000 people.
New York World Fair 1939. Emphasized automobile use and other modernist concepts as solutions to problems, such as the application of science.
First skyscraper First skyscraper built in Chicago in 1885. Made possible by the availability of steel in construction and safety elevators, first created by Elisha Otis.
