| imperialism | the building of an empire |
| nationalism | the love of your country |
| militarism | desire of a country to maintain a strong military and be prepared to use it |
| Allied Powers | Countries fighting against the Central Powers in WWI |
| Central Powers | Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire during WWI |
| czar | Emperor of Russia |
| communism | political system with a command economy and frequently an autocratic government |
| Soviet Union | Russia under the control of the communist party |
| Stock Market | a place where stocks and bonds are "traded" – meaning bought and sold |
| economic depression | a severe and long-tern downturn in the economy that results in high unemployment and business closures |
| Nazism | political system established by Adolf Hitler in Germany before WWII |
| treaty | an agreement between countries |
| genocide | the killing of a whole race of people |
| Holocaust | the killing of the Jews by Nazi Germany during WWII |
| Cold War | was a sustained period of political and military tension between the United States with NATO and others and Russia with the Warsaw Pact and others |
| NATO | North Atlantic Treaty Organization - a military alliance including USA, Canada, and many Western European Countries |
| Warsaw Pact | military alliance including Russia and most of the Eastern European Countries |
| superpower | an extremely powerful nation, especially one capable of influencing international events and the acts and policies of less powerful nations. |
