Union The United States of America
Confederate States of America Southern states who seceded from the Union (US).
secede To withdraw (leave) from a group
abolish To do away with
blockade Closing off a port, harbor, or city with ships or troops.
Reconstruction The period after the Civil War when the south was rebuilding the damage from the war.
segregation Separating into groups by a characteristic
sharecropper A tenant farmer
cotton gin A machine for separating the fibers of cotton from the seeds.
Underground Railroad A system for helping fugitive slaves escape to places of safety.
fugitive A person who is fleeing prosecution
abolitionists People who worked to end slavery.
Emancipation Proclamation A proclamation by Abraham Lincoln freeing the slaves in the south.
overseer manager of a plantation
patroller A person assigned to maintain order
plantation A large farm or estate
cultivation To prepare and work on land in order to raise crops.
expansion To make bigger
