| Underground Railroad | A system for helping fugitive slaves escape to places of safety. |
| fugitive | A person who is fleeing prosecution |
| abolitionists | People who worked to end slavery. |
| Emancipation Proclamation | A proclamation by Abraham Lincoln freeing the slaves in the south. |
