1st Battle of Bull Run This early battle proved to both sides that the war would not end quickly.
Seven Day's Battle This battle, part of McClellan's failed Peninsular Campaign, forced the Union to retreat from Richmond, Virginia.
2nd Battle of Bull Run The Confederate victory here convinced Robert E. Lee to take the war to the North.
Antietam This bloody single-day battle of the Civil War stopped Robert E. Lee's march north.
Clash of the Ironclads This battle between the Monitor and the Virginia (formerly the Merrimack), revolutionized naval warfare.
Battle of Shiloh This battle fought in Tennessee, gave the North greater control of the Mississippi River.
Fall of New Orleans Farrugut camouflaged his ships and slipped past New Orleans, taking Baton Rouge and Natchez on his way to Vicksburg.
Siege of Vicksburg By cutting off supplies to this city, the Union was able to win this battle and take full control of the Mississippi.
