What are entrepreneurs? People who supply money and imagination to a business. A foresighted ambitious person who organizes and assumes the risk of a business venture
Who invented the light bulb? Tomas edison
What did I. M. Singer create? Sewing machine
What did Edison create? Light bulb and phonograph
What was the Haymmarket Square strike? Speaker stepped down and bomb went off killing seven. Union was blamed for bomb.
Who were the people hired to work in place of those on strike? Strikebreakers
What was the Homestead act? AFL asked for a raise and locked out by management. Turned into a gun battle between strikers and detectives.
What was the Pullman strike? Business lowered wages and workers went on strike. THe plant shut down. Rail traffic halted and federal troops were sent in. Established precedents of using court orders and federal troops to end strike.
Who were the immigrants that immigrated in the 1890's? Southern and eastern European immigrants

Why did people immigrate? escaping poverty, political turmoil, gold rush, work, religious persecution

What was the assembly line? moving belt that workers preformed one small task at, made making things faster and cheaper.
Who introduced the assembly line? Henry Ford
What was mass production? Manufacturing of a large quantities of the same time. Quicker and cheaper, raw materials were less expensive, needed more unskilled labor.
What was dangerous about the factories? Poisonous gasses, high temperatures, dangerous machines, low pay, no programs for unemployed workers.
What was a small town that workers lived in? Company towns
Workers not happy about blanks, thought that the company had too much control over their lives? Company towns
What was a labor union? A worker’s organization that would try to obtain better wags and better working conditions
First influential union in the us? Knights of labor.
American Federation of Labor? Wanted shorter hours, improved conditions, focusing on skilled laborers
