| pioneer | A person who first settles a new place |
| territory | A place owned and governed by a country |
| treaty | An agreement between groups or countries |
| compare | To tell how two or more people or things are alike |
| contrast | To tell how to or more people or things are different |
| classify | To group information |
| equality | The state of having the same rights as all other people |
| rebellion | A fight against a government |
| dictator | a government leader who takes control by force and makes all important decisions |
| grant | A gift of land given by a government |
| empresario | A person who had received land as a gift from the Mexican government and could sell it to others |
| militia | A group of unpaid citizens who act as an army |
| Tejano | A Texan who has Mexican ancestors |
| bilingual | Able to speak two languages |
| title | The ownership of land or property |
| Anglo | A person whose ancestors are from Britain;a white person |
