VOCABULARY

Executive Branch made up of the president, the cabinet and the vice president
Legislative Branch made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives
Judicial Branch The Supreme Court
Supreme Court Most powerful court-can settle disagreements or disputes brought to them by governor or any person... Interprets amendements
Commander in chief President is in charge of armed forces
Cabinet Group of advisors to a head of state or President
Military Having to do with war or armed forces. Navy, Air Force, Army, and Marines
Article 1 of the Constitution Gives congress the power to make laws. Says Congress should have a Senate and House of Representatives
Amendments A change or correction made by a certain process to the Constitution
Checks and Balances A plan to keep any part of a government from becoming too powerful
Veto The power of the president to reject or forbid a rule or law
Congress The legislative branch of the United States Government; it includes the Senate and House of Representatives
Federal Court includes district courts, courts of appeals and the Supreme court
Preamble An introduction or short statement of purpose of the Constitution
citizen A person who has been given certain rights, duties and privileges because he or she was born or chooses to live in a city, state or country
General Welfare Providing for the welfare (well-being) of the general public
Civil rights No one may be denied the right to vote (discriminated against) because of race color sex or religieion
Equality Having the same rights as others
Voting The process of officially choosing for or against something or someone.
Separation of Powers Government power is divided between the executive legislative and judicial branches
Federalism A system of government in which power is divided between a central government and state governments
Republic A government in which citizens elect people to speak and act for them
Judicial Review A higher court's review of a lower courts decisions
Due process of law The right to a fair trial according to rules and procedures
