| Popular Sovereignty | Principle of government that all political power comes from the people |
| Republic | Government in which authority comes from the people and power is exercised by elected officials according to set laws |
| Limited Government | Principle of government in which power is limited buy set laws such as those in a constitution |
| Separation of Powers | Principle of government in which powers are divided among different government branches |
| Legislative Branch | Branch of government that makes the laws |
| Executive Branch | Branch of government in that enforces, or carries out the laws |
| Judicial Branch | Branch of government in which courts decide legal cases and interpret laws |
| Checks & Balances | Governmental arrangement by which each different branch has the power to check, or restrict, the power of the other branches |
| Veto | Power exercised by the executive brach of government to reject a law |
| Override | Legislative power to reserve a vetoed bill |
| Federalism | System of government that balances powers by distribution them between one central and many regional governments |
| Bill of Rights | Government document that outlines the civil liberties, or individual rights, that a government promises to protect |
| Amendments | Additions, changes, or corrections to a constitution |
| Bicameral | Having two legislative houses |
| Bill | Proposed law |
| Judicial Review | Courts' power to determine if a law is constitutional |
| Misdemeanors | Minor crimes |

| Grand Jury | Jury that decides if a person should be indicated, or formally charged |
| Petit Jury | Jury that decides the verdict in a trial |
