Chapter One vocabulary for American Minorities.

Ethnic Cleansing | Taking people's property, displacing them, and/or killing them because of differences. |
Social Distance | The degree of closeness or remoteness individuals prefer in interaction with members of other groups. |
Unity Syndrome | The coalescing of various groups against a common enemy. |
Categoric Knowing | The classification of others on the basis of limited information obtained visually and perhaps verbally. |
Naturalized Citizen | When a stranger to a group acquires the characteristics of the natives. |
Social Identity Theory | In-group members almost automatically think of their group as better than out-groups. |
Reference Group | A group to which people may or may not belong but to which they refer when evaluating themselves and their behavior. |
Value Neutrality | Being objective when it comes to the values and relations of other races and ethnicities. |
Dillingham Flaw | Any inaccurate comparison based on simplistic categorizations and anachronistic judgments. |
Functional Theory | A macro-level sociological perspective emphasizing social order and stability, with harmonious independent parts. |
False Consciousness | Holding attitudes that do not accurately reflect the objective facts of a situation. |
Social Construction of Reality | The process by which definitions of reality are socially created, objectified, internalized, and then taken for granted. |
Internalization | Learning of supposedly objective facts of reality through the socialization process. |
Social Hierarchy | Group's social power in an area; may change from country to country. |
Endogamy | The practice of marrying within one's group due to social isolation. |
Race | A categorization in which people sharing visible biological characteristics regard themselves or are regarded by others as a single group on that basis. |
Ethnic Group | Refers to social groupings that are unique because of religious, linguistic, or cultural characteristics. |
