TermDefinition
Greece Introduced the concept of American Democracy.
Magna Carta A special document that limited the power of a tyrant king, which formed the basis of modern democracies.
Declaration of Independence The Founders wanted to tell the King of England that they wanted to free from English rule, so they wrote this document.
English Bill of Rights of 1689 A document that limited the power of the British monarchs and was presented in Parliament.
Great Compromise Formed when the small states felt they wouldn't have enough representation in Congress if they assigned a certain number of delegates to each state. The small states wanted to be represented equally. 
Constitution Outlines the basis for America's government, justice, and individual rights for American citizens.
Dictatorship An autocratic form of government in which the government is ruled by an individual.
Democracy Form of government in which all eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives.
Will of the Majority Cannot be used to deprive rights to a member of a minority group in a democracy.
State Legislatures A proposal requires approval by 2/3 of Congress and 3/4 of what to formally amend the Constitution.
Separation of Powers The Constitutional principle of three separate branches.
Checks and Balances A way to make sure that no one branch becomes too powerful.
Limited Government Government restricted by law.
Federalism When government is divided into federal and state sectors.
Suffrage Right to vote.
Incumbent Existing holder of a political office.
Existing holder of a political office. Two major political parties.
Minor Parties Provide platforms for non-mainstream political views.
Political Party An organization to gain political power.
National Convention Nominates a candidate for the party and negotiates a party platform
