TermDefinition
Mixing zone An area where warm and cold waters mix and stir up nutrients from the ocean floor. The fish feed on the plankton.
First Nations Native groups who lived south of the Arctic region in Canada.
Cultural mosaic When people from different areas retain their cultural identity. Canada is multicultural and bilingual.
plural society Distinctive cultural, ethnic, and racial groups are encouraged to maintain their own identities and cultures. Multiculturalism.
Free trade Removal of trade barriers.
Northwest Passage Hypothetical North American passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Compromise Establishing common ideas that people agree to follow.
Dominion Territory that governs itself but is still tied to its colonizing country.
Inuit Indigenous people of Canada’s far north.
Province Territory that is under the control of a larger country.
New France French colony in what is now eastern Canada.
Permafrost Permanently frozen soil.
Quota Limits on the number of traded goods.
Tariff Taxes on foreign goods.
Embargo A ban on trading with certain nations, in place for some countries and goods.
Tundra Area with limited vegetation, such as moss and shrubs.
Igloo Home made from blocks of ice by the Inuit.
