Quetzalcoatl The Aztec god that told them to settle where they saw an eagle on a cactus with a serpent in its mouth.
Quipu Colored knotted string used to record information.
hieroglyphics Picture or symbol used to represent sound, a word or a syllable.
peninsula A piece of land surrounded by water on three sides.
maize Corn an important crop to the Maya people.
chinampas Floating gardens for growing crops.
irrigation Supplying dry land with water.
causeway A raised road across a body of water.
tribute Tribute is taxes.
runners People used to pass messages from one city to the next along the long systems of roads of the Andes.
terraces Land used for farming that was along one side of hills or mountains.
empire People and /or land ruled by one ruler/king/emperor.
valley Low land between two mountains
