Term 3 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Patriots Colonial Americans that felt that colonies needed more self-government, and wanted more independence from Great Britain.
Loyalists Colonial Americans who remained loyal to Great Britain even when other colonists were criticizing the government.
Revolution A drastic change in power or organizational structures that takes place in a short period of time. Often results in a change of government.
Independence Freedom from the control or influence of other people or countries.
Rights Something that is guaranteed by a government or religion.
Social Class Someone's place in society.Higher classes traditionally are more wealthy and have more privileges.
Treason An action that goes against one's government.
Traitor Someone who actively works against his or her own government.
Propaganda Misleading information, rumors, or ideas deliberately spread widely to hurt or help an institution, nation, person, group, movement, et cetera.
Tyranny An unjustly severe government on part of any ruler.
Boycott The act of refusing to have dealings with (as a person, organization, or store) usually to express disapproval and hoping for change.
Legislature A group of people elected to make laws.
Enlightenment A philosophical movement characterized by the belief in the power of human thought and by changes in government, science, religion, and education.
Petition A request to do something, most commonly requesting government action.
Smuggle Moving illegal trade items into or out of a country.
Smuggler Someone who moves illegal trade items into or out of a country.
Minutemen A group of soldiers that fought for the Patriot cause during the American revolution.
Intolerable Unbearable, unacceptable.
Massacre A brutal slaughter of many people. (Verb) To deliberately and violently kill a large amount of people.
Apprentice A person who is learning a job from a skilled worker, having agreed to work for a fixed period at low wages. (Verb) To hire someone as a/an *blank*.
Economy The wealth and resources of a country.
Militia A military force made up of citizens to help defend a country in case of emergency.
Repeal To cancel or get rid of a law.
Artisan A worker in a skilled trade, especially making things by hand.
Inalienable Unable to be taken away or given away by the possessor.
Supremacy Having power or authority over a group of people.
Social Contract The idea that rulers get their power from the consent of the people. The people give up some rights (total freedom) so that the rulers can prevent chaos / anarchy. If the rulers abuse the people's rights, the people must create a new government.
Broadside / Pamphlet A song or piece of writing printed on one side of the paper during colonial times. Could be printed quickly and distributed throughout the day.
Scientific Revolution A time period (1500-1800) when people developed new ideas in math, science, astronomy, medicine, chemistry, and biology.
Casualties People missing/ killed/ injured in action, battle, or war.
Correspondence News, information, opinions, exchanged by letter.
Writs Formal legal documents issued by the English government.
Coerce To force a change in behavior through harsh treatment/ threats.
