| democratic republic | a form of government embodying democratic principles and where a monarch is not the head of state |
| constitution | a document that describes the rights of the people and the framework of the government |
| bicameral | refers to a two-house legislature |
| unicameral | describes a one-house legislature |
| infastructure | roads, bridges, ports |
| proportional representation | representation based upon population |
| electoral college | a group of people (electors) from each state whose job it is to vote to determine the president |
| ratify | to approve officially |
| new jersey plan | Proposed a single-chamber congress in which each state had one vote. This created a conflict with representation between bigger states, who wanted control befitting their population, and smaller states, who didn't want to be bullied by larger states. |
| virginia plan | Virginia delegate James Madison's plan of government, in which states got a number of representatives in Congress based on their population |
| articles of confederation | An agreement among the thirteen original states, approved in 1781, that provided a loose federal government before the present Constitution went into effect in 1789. |
| constitution of the united states of america | the constitution written at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787 and subsequently ratified by the original thirteen states |
| federalism | a system in which the national government and state governments share authority over the same territory and the same people |
| amendment | an alteration of or addition to a motion, bill, constitution, etc. |
| elastic clause | a statement in the U.S. constitution (Article I, Section 8) granting Congress the power to pass all laws necessary and proper for carrying out the enumerated list of powers. |
| sectionalism | putting one's section of the country ahead of the nation as a whole |
| sufferage | the right to vote |
| abolitionist | one who wished to end slavery right away |
| emancipation | to free someone from someone else's control or power |
| slavery | the practice of owning people as property and forcing those people to work for a slaveholder |
| separation of powers | powers of the government are spread throughout the branches of government |
