Here are activities to help you review required vocabulary for 8th grade.

primary source | comes from someone who observed or witnessed the event/time period being studied |
secondary source | comments/interpretations made on an event at a later period of time |
Enlightenment | a time of thinking and great learning in science/math/government |
ratify | to approve |
tariff | a tax on imported and sometimes exported goods |
mercantilism | country's goal is to bring as much gold and silver into a country as possible |
boycott | means to refuse to buy goods |
colonize | to set up an area that is controlled by a mother country that usually far away |
immigration | to come to a new country to live there |
migration | to move from one country to another |
militia | a group of ordinary citizens with little training who are ready to fight when needed |
missionaries | people whose job is to spread religion to other groups of people |
missions | places where Native Americans were taught the Christian faith |
petition | a paper with citizens' signatures that show unhappiness or a need for change in a law/action |
indentured servant | a person who works for an individual for a certain period of time to pay off a debt. |
plantation | a large area of fertile land usually worked by people who live on the land |
repeal | to reject, take back or get rid of |
treaty | a formal agreement dealing with peace, trade, economic between or among countries |
territory | an area of land owned by a country |
constitution | a set of laws/plan for government |
impeach | to accuse of wrongdoing |
separation of powers | dividing the power of government into the three branches: legislative, executive, judicial |
federalism | dividing of power between the national and state governments |
checks and balances | ways that each branch can "check" the other branches to balance government power |
bicameral | means two "chambers" or houses and describes the US legislative branch |
veto | means to reject |
amendment | change made to the US Constitution |
