1 jim crow laws The systematic practice of discriminating against and segregating Black people, especially as practiced in the American South from the end of Reconstruction to the mid-20th century.
2 poll tax a tax levied on every adult, without reference to income or resources.
3 literacy test the context of United States political history, refers to the government practice of testing the literacy of potential citizens at the federal level, and potential voters at the state level
4 grandfather clause a clause exempting certain classes of people or things from the requirements of a piece of legislation affecting their previous rights, privileges, or practices.
5 las goras blancas Las Gorras Blancas was a group active in the American Southwest in the late 1880s and early 1890s in response to Anglo-American land grabbers
6 spoils system the practice of a successful political party giving public office to its supporters
7 civil service the permanent professional branches of a government's administration, excluding military and judicial branches and elected politicians.
8 pendleton civil service act a law that was established in 1883. It states that the government jobs should be awarded based on merit.
9 gold standard the system by which the value of a currency was defined in terms of gold, for which the currency could be exchanged. The gold standard was generally abandoned in the Depression of the 1930s.
10 grange a farmers' association organized in 1867. The Grange sponsors social activities, community service, and political lobbying.
11 populist party a former political party in the United States; formed in 1891 to advocate currency expansion and state control of railroads
