sociology study of human societies and the forces that affect them
microsociology study of smaller components that make up society (individuals, families, communities)
macrosociology study of "the big picture" its primary concern is society as a whole.

theory something you can test. Theories are falsifiable. They must stand up to constant tests and retests to prove their value
ecological evolutionary theory examines society in relation to its surroundings and explore how it has changed over time.

Auguste comte Founder of sociology. Advocated positivism to studying social life. Practiced "armchair philosophy". Didn't conduct scientific research.
Positivism Use of scientific method to study the social world.
Herbert Spencer Social Darwinism. Societies evolve from lower to higher forms. Didn't conduct scientific research.
Social Darwinism Survival of the fittest.
Karl Marx Class Conflict. Believed social class conflict is the engine of human history.
Class Conflict Struggle between Proletariat and Bourgeoisie.
Proletariat Lowest class. Class of workers.
Bourgeoisie Capitalists. Middle Class.
Emile Durkheim Social Integration. Studied suicide rates and concluded social forces underlie suicidal behavior.
Altruistic Suicide excessive social interaction. Ex: Suicide bombing
Egoistic Suicide occurs when people feel detached from society. Ex: feeling lonely, unappreciated, and unimportant.
Anomic Suicide Occurs when there is a state of normlessness. When things aren't what they are supposed to be. Ex: Cafe closing before its normal time.
Max Weber Religion. Believed religion is the central force of social change.
Harriet Martineau Wrote "Society in America"
Jane Addams Co-founded the Hull House. Campaigned for laws against child labor. Co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize
W.E.B Du Bois published books on the race relations between African Americans and Whites.
Symbolic Interaction Individuals evaluate their own conduct by comparing themselves with others.
