How did Tang farmers improve agriculture? They improved irrigation, introduced new ways of growing crops, and developed new kinds of rice that grew well in poor soil, grew faster and were resistant to disease
What are important Chinese inventions or discoveries? They discovered coal, steel, moveable type, gunpowder, and large ships with rudders and sails
What is coal's relation to steel production? the Chinese used coal to heat furnaces at high temperatures, which led to the discovery that molten iron when mixed with the carbon in the coal created steel
What is China's only foreign ruled dynasty? The Mongols ruled China from 1271-1368.
Why are Zheng He's voyages important? He travelled all over Southeast Asia, India, Persian gulf, and west Africa. His voyages expanded trade, spread Chinese culture and increased China's wealth.
What is the Forbidden City? The Forbidden City was the home of the Emperor in Bejing. Only top officials could enter. It had beautiful gardens and many palaces with thousands of rooms.
Why were the civil service exams important? They created the scholar official class that worked for the government. Only people who passed the exams could have these jobs. The exams were open to anyone and not based on class rank
Why did Buddhism grow in China? Buddhism taught that people could escape their suffering by following its principles.

What is the name of the trade route that stretched from China to Eastern Europe? The Silk Road
